Brighton to Gatwick Airport transfers

Gatwick is the airport Brighton treats as its own: roughly thirty miles straight up the A23 and M23, and the transfer we are asked for more than all the others combined.

The journey

It is a single run north on the A23, joining the M23 near Pease Pottage and leaving it at the airport. There is no sensible alternative route, which makes the timing unusually predictable outside the morning peak — and unusually sensitive to an incident on the A23 when there is one.

Both terminals are served. If your airline has told you which one you are flying from, tell us; if it has not, the flight number will sort it out.

Car or train?

Honestly: if you are travelling alone with hand luggage in the middle of the day, the direct train from Brighton station is quick and hard to beat. A car earns its place when there are several of you, when you are carrying hold luggage, when you are leaving before the trains are useful, or when your pickup point is nowhere near a station.

That is also why Gatwick bookings cluster around the early hours. If your flight goes before eight, book the car well ahead.

What to give us when you book

The flight number is the detail that does the most work — it lets the pickup be planned around the flight rather than around the time printed on your ticket.

  • Pickup address, with a flat or building number.
  • The terminal, if your airline has told you which one.
  • The flight number and the departure or arrival time.
  • Passenger count and the number of bags.
  • Anything that changes the vehicle: a wheelchair, a child seat, sports equipment.

Coming back

Return pickups are booked the same way. Give us the inbound flight number so the collection can be planned around the flight itself, and call us if the flight moves — the booking line is staffed around the clock.

Gatwick transfers: questions and answers

How far is Gatwick Airport from Brighton?
Roughly 30 miles by road, almost all of it on the A23 and M23. It is the closest major airport to Brighton and Hove by a considerable margin.
Do you cover both Gatwick terminals?
Yes, North and South. Tell us the terminal if you know it, and give us the flight number either way.
How is the fare confirmed?
The fare is confirmed with you before the booking is accepted, by phone on 01273 220220 or as part of the online booking. This website does not publish fixed airport fares, because the price depends on the route, the vehicle and the time of travel.
Can you collect very early in the morning?
Yes. Early departures are the most common reason people book a Gatwick transfer rather than taking the train, and the booking line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
